The Portsmouth Police Department can now call themselves the Green Police now that they are sporting new green police uniforms. The uniforms are not literally colored green, but rather are almost entirely made from recycled materials.

In a campaign to turn the “men in blue” into the “green police,” the Green Alliance wanted local organizations to use more environmentally friendly materials. The Portsmouth PD, in a bid to become the green police of the state, decided to buy waterproof fleece jackets made from recycled plastic bottles. The Green Alliance certified Warehouse Clothing Outlet, who sell the green police uniforms, as “green”. The jackets are made from melted plastic bottles that are spun into warm and tough fabric.

The Portsmouth PD bought the soft shell fleece so they could support local businesses and as well as promote the use of recycled materials. According to Sarah Brown, the jackets represent less waste ending up in landfills. The same jackets (obviously without the police ID markings) are available to the public for $44. “Right off the bat it was a situation where we wanted to support them and they were very interested in supporting local businesses,” said Dennis Randall, owner of Warehouse Clothing Outlet. “That really made it the great partnership it’s become.”
