Acas Reports Increase in Workplace Stress
In its yearly report, Acas has brought forth several startling facts about employment relations in the UK. The report focuses on the increase in work related stress in the last one year due to recession.
Acas, the employment relations service, has noticed a significant rise in number of unfair dismissal cases and related conciliation and other employment tribunal cases, as well as request for advice on redundancy over the last year. Ed Sweeney, Acas Chair, commenting on the same, said that the figures in the report are reflective of the problems that had to be faced by the businesses as well as employees in the previous year.
The report indicates that Acas has received over 78,000 cases on conciliation that have been directed by the Employment Tribunal Service, the increase being of around one-fifth of the total number of cases last year. There is also a substantial increase in number of cases on conciliation for unfair dismissal, which has shot up by 12,000 to reach 55,000 cases, in contrast to the previous trend of decreasing cases.
Calls that are received by Acas through their helpline service have also seen an increase of 100% from the last year. These calls are meant for seeking advice on redundancy. Due to the increasing number of calls, Acas had to extend the helpline to work through the evening and also on Saturdays to satisfy the increasing demand for advice.
